Mikkeli, Finland June 27– July 1, 2016
Pärnu, Estonia August 2–7, 2016
My two next conducting masterclasses will take place in Mikkeli, Finland and in Pärnu, Estonia. The Mikkeli masterclass will once again be organized in cooperation with the Gergiev Festival Mikkeli, which means that in addition to the rehearsals and the final concert with St Michel Strings chamber orchestra the participants can also observe Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in rehearsal.
The masterclass in Pärnu, Estonia in August 2-6 is organized by the Pärnu City Orchestra, and the participants will have minimum of 20 minutes daily podium time plus the final concert. The repertoire is Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, Mozart’s Violin concerto No. 5 and Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony ”Italian”.
Spending time studying with Sasha Mäkilä has been the most rewarding learning experience of my conducting career. He not only gave me new tools to use when in front of the orchestra but an open and honest dialogue about the ins and outs of being a leader from the podium. Sasha Mäkilä is a true conducting pedagogue and musician that every conductor, young and old, should spend time studying with.
